Tommy and the Broken Window: A Story Close to My Heart
Every story begins somewhere. And Tommy and the Broken Window? Well, that story begins with my son—Joshua.
When Joshua was a little boy, he had more energy than a spring breeze and a curiosity that could outpace any grown-up’s patience. He was bright, adventurous, always asking questions, and yes—more than a little mischievous. From the time he could walk, he wanted to understand how the world worked. If something had gears, buttons, or made a strange noise, you could bet he'd be right in the middle of it, hands-on and eyes wide.
Now Joshua is a grown man with children of his own. Two adult sons and —two teenage boys who remind me daily of that same wide-eyed wonder and spark for life. It’s a beautiful thing, watching the next generation carry forward the joyful chaos of childhood, just as their dad did. Sometimes I catch a familiar grin or a glint of mischief in their eyes, and I think, Here we go again.
It was those memories—the scraped knees, the endless questions, the moments of “Oops… I didn’t mean to…”—that inspired Tommy and the Broken Window.
Tommy is eight years old. He’s tall for his age, curious as a cat, and bursting with big ideas. He wears his red Keds, tie-dye tee, and denim overalls like a superhero uniform. Whether he's imagining pirate gold hidden in the backyard shed or scoring the winning goal in an imaginary soccer tournament, Tommy is always chasing a new adventure.
But one sunny afternoon, that imagination leads to a big mistake—and a loud CRASH.
A window is broken. A heart beats fast. And a decision has to be made.
Will Tommy hide from the truth, or find the courage to own up to what he's done?
This story is more than just a tale about a boy and a broken window. It’s about those childhood moments we all remember—the ones that feel like the end of the world but turn out to be powerful lessons in honesty, responsibility, and what it means to be brave. I wrote this story not only for children, but also for the parents, teachers, and caregivers who help kids navigate those tricky moments with love and guidance.
It’s my hope that Tommy and the Broken Window sparks conversation, reflection, and maybe even a few chuckles—because let’s face it, who hasn’t broken a window (literally or figuratively) at some point in their life?
To my Joshua—thank you for the inspiration. Your spark continues to light the pages of every story I write.
And to every reader, big or small, I invite you to meet Tommy. He might just remind you of someone you love.
With warmth and gentleness,
Liv
