Supporting Young Readers with Wisdom and Warmth: How Canadian Classrooms and Liv McLean Books Are Lighting the Way
by Liv McLean
If you’ve ever watched a child’s eyes widen while they discover the twist in a tale or giggle uncontrollably at a story’s surprise ending, then you already know—reading isn’t just a skill. It’s magic.
Across Canada, schools and teachers are doing a truly beautiful job weaving that magic into their daily classroom life. From cozy reading corners lined with beanbags and book baskets to enthusiastic guest-reader events and themed literacy weeks, our educators are creating rich, joyful experiences around books. It’s not just about phonics and punctuation—it’s about wonder.
But let’s be honest: even with the best curriculum, not every child is a natural-born bookworm. Some need a nudge. Others require a giggle. Many need a story that sees them—quirks, questions, messy feelings and all.
And that’s exactly where my books come in.
As a Canadian author (and very proud Nana), I’ve spent years as an artist and author creating children’s books that wrap important life lessons in delightfully cheeky wrappers. I don’t just want kids to read—I want them to fall in love with stories.
Take Tommy and the Broken Window, for instance. It’s a laugh-out-loud adventure about a boy, a soccer ball, and one very unfortunate pane of glass. But beneath the mischief? A heartfelt message about honesty, consequences, and doing the right thing—even when it’s hard.
Or consider Finny Minny Meow – Happy To Be Me, a playful, tender story that reassures kids it’s perfectly okay to be different. It’s packed with colourful illustrations, feline impersonations (meow!), and most importantly, encouragement for kids to love themselves just as they are.
Teachers have shared that they use these stories as springboards for classroom discussions about emotions, friendship, and decision-making. One teacher even told me her students now say, “That’s a Finny Moment!” when someone feels wobbly but tries their best. (Best. Compliment. Ever.)
My books are designed to be read aloud, laughed over, and talked about. They don’t preach—they play. But embedded in every silly moment is a seed of wisdom. Whether it’s Monty Munches the Moon teaching about balance and community, or The Ruckety Tuckety House showing kids that true treasure often isn’t gold or jewels—it’s the people who stand beside you—these stories stick.
Canada’s classrooms are brimming with care. Teachers go above and beyond daily, creating safe spaces, encouraging empathy, and championing every child’s unique journey as a reader. It’s a joy to know that my books can support that mission, giving educators and families fun and meaningful tools.
As a lifelong writer (seriously, I was the kid with the pencil, scrap paper and a dream), I believe books should delight the heart while growing the mind. And yes, I might sneak in a pun or two along the way. "Giggle-Lit: Where Reading Meets Rolling on the Floor."
So if you're a parent, teacher, or grandparent looking to inspire the little reader, look no further. Let’s turn reluctant readers into story lovers, one giggle and lesson at a time.
